G’day Mates!
I know, I know, I know… I’ve read your emails, received your text, listened to the voice mails. I APOLOGIZE! I hate to make excuses but it was a busy fourth quarter! Regardless, I will try to do better with being consistent with my post. But I know you all know I wouldn’t let the year end (well…Its Saturday, January 1, 2011 here but in the states it hasn’t hit 12AM yet) without saying something…
First of all before I get started, I have to let you know that I am writing this post from OZ! I’m in love with this place! I know I may be getting on some of your nerves talking about it so much but next to Southern Italy this has to be my second favorite place. If you have an opportunity to visit Australia please do so. The country is AMAZING. The people are AMAZING. The Aboriginal art & culture is AMAZING. The wildlife is AMAZING and the Diving and other outdoor activities are AMAZING. As you all know right next to my love for film is my love for exploration/travel. Aussie has been on my list of places to visit for a while but for some reason I did not expect for it to be so peaceful and beautiful…
In the movie “AUSTRALIA” with Nicole Kidman & Hugh Jackman, the Aboriginal boy (Nullah played by Brandon Walters) says “Sometimes we have to get lost to find ourselves. Sometimes we just have to go walkabout.” This year was definitely a powerful year for me. I continued my learning as a Producer/Filmmaker. I worked on and developed new film projects. I met tons of new and exciting individuals. I established positive business and personal relationships. I set out to find more knowledgable mentors. I set several new goals for myself like reading more, becoming a better businessman, adding more travel destinations to my list and learning to scuba dive. All of which I accomplished thanks to the mega support from my close friends and family like Diana, Carl, Keisha, Ben, Marc, Condra, O, Miguel, Anastasia, Sophie, Chris Brown, Y C Moore, Chris W, Giz, Tiff, FAAB, TJ, Gaux, Nic Nic, Shamika, Kyishia, Reg, The Zoo, all my Prairie View A&M University fam and a few others that it would take a while to mention. (I love all of you!)
I am excited about the future. The more I read and travel the more I realize what I don’t know. I know now that it is impossible to fill our brains and that we should be open to new things, new adventures, new people, new cultures, new ideas. Do NOT live in fear. Do NOT be your own worst enemy. I had the pleasure of reading a book earlier this year where the writer ironically enough identifies 4 primary personality types using a film crew to do so. Each personality type has its own strengths and of course its own weaknesses. Here is how he described them:
The Star of the Show – Otter: cheerful, bubbly, happy-go-lucky. Avoids chores but always find friends to bail them out just because they’re so likeable. Everything they say is funny. They get good marks in school in everything but conduct and penmanship. They hate to practice because their chief aim in life is to have fun. A talker, optimistic, animated and excited, undisciplined, forgetful, and eager for credit.
The Director – Lion: Love to be in control. Knows exactly what they want and are perfectly willing to let everyone else know it too. They sense instinctively which people know what they’re talking about and which ones don’t. They get their work done quickly and can’t understand why others are unable to duplicate their efforts. They tend to be the captain of the team and president of the club. A worker, controlling, dynamic, decisive, ambitious, goal-oriented, bossy, impatient, and domineering.
The Producer – Beaver : Sensitive to their surroundings and tend to be moved to tears. They alphabetize their bookshelf, ensure that everything on a table top is squared, centered, and evenly spaced – silverware, napkins, food, etc. Tend to be compulsive. They love lists. They get their work done on time and then do extra research projects. They practice until they drop to ensure everything is perfect, but they hate to show anyone what they’ve done for fear of failure or rejection. They are compassionate and support the underdog. They get discouraged when everything doesn’t turn out as they planned and no one else seems to care. They dream the impossible dream of a perfect world. A thinker, deep and purposeful, sensitive, talented and creative, analytical and orderly, moody and negative, too introspective, socially insecure, and easily depressed.
The Backstage Crew – Golden Retriever: Tend to be passive and understanding. They love to help other people, but don’t ask them to take control. They obey all the rules and never give anyone a hard time. They do their school work on time but they never do more than what’s necessary. They get nominated for various projects, but don’t mind if they don’t win. They try to keep everyone happy – peace at any cost. Mediator, easy-going, calm and relaxed, patient and unoffensive, quiet but witty, unmotivated, unenthusiastic, indecisive, and eager to rest.
At the end of the day we tend to be a mixture of the personalities but there is one personality that dominates us. But what we want to strive for is Balance. This is what I am working on. We want to avoid the extremes in our experiences and in our emotions, in our activity and in our rest, so that we achieve balance. We want to be able to pay the bills, but not be so driven for money that we become greedy. We want to be helpful, but not so bound by our obligations to others that we ignore our own needs. We want to love our friends and family, but not be so loving that we ignore bad behavior. We want to have nice things, but not be so compelled to buy them that we wind up in poverty. Balance.
When we deal with other people, we want to understand what motivates them or inhibits them in their pursuit of a better life. We don’t want to trigger their fears. Instead, we want to stimulate their drives. When we learn how to do that, we aren’t “manipulating” them. We are freeing them to pursue their goals and dreams.
There were several ideas and lessons that we can learn from this book and I will begin to share them with you through my upcoming post but I wanted to start this new year off with Balance because I’ve noticed through out my journey that is a major struggle within my circle.
Now onto a answers to few questions that people have emailed me over the last few months and finally my ending thoughts….
My favorite films: Black Orpheus (1959), Malcolm X (1992), Forrest Gump (1994), Legends of the Fall (1994), Bravehart (1995), and Gladiator (2000)
My favorite films of 2010(Box Office): (I was all about Action and SFX this year, so here they are.) The Town, The Book of Eli, Alice in Wonderland, The Expendables and Iron Man 2
My favorite TV shows: Spartacus & Entourage
Finally, I’ll try and keep this short, but in life, during our journey to be better people, to make a lot of money, to building that legacy, to doing whatever is important to you, we are at times beat up, pushed off path, obstacles are thrown in our way and as a result things seem bleak but it is important to realize that our journey is beautiful as long as we continue moving forward with a positive attitude. Do NOT let negative people steal your joy. Be strong, not weak. Sometimes you need to just step away and enjoy life. Don’t take everything so serious. Remember, the greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances. Happiness is a direction, not a place. Laugh, travel, learn and do new things. Start set goals for yourself, write them down and believe in yourself! Believe you can and you’re halfway there!
Again, I am excited about the future. I have several challenging and exciting projects that I will be working on and sharing with you in the near future. I will definitely be spending some time in Belize and Morocco this year with the homies. Oh… and stay tuned, Marc Rob and I are currently working on an amazing adVENTURE coming to you soon. And I must say this one more time…. THANK YOU to all my supporting friends and family. MUCH LOVE!
Cheers,
- TY WALKER
Hey Ty, thanks for sharing this post! I’m working on living a balanced life too and just launched a new project of mine called the Middle Path Makeover: http://zenfuldance.wordpress.com/2010/12/30/day-129-day-1-launching-the-middle-path-makeover/ I’m hoping to be consistent for 129 days and hopeful the results will bring more satisfaction than what it has brought me in the past (e.g. “what the hell have I been doing for the last five months???”). Feel free to join me or just follow along and I’ll do my best to be a regular blogger. Here’s to a happy, healthy, successful and peaceful 2011! – The Zenful Blogger (Leah Joy)
