MAGIC CITY

Starz knows how to pick them.  I do not watch much TV but they had me hooked with “SPARTACUS” and now their new show “MAGIC CITY” is looking amazing.  Great cast and plot.  The show premieres April 6th.

Miami Beach, 1959.  As Ike Evans rings in the New Year at his luxurious Miramar Playa Hotel, Havana falls to Castro’s rebels. It’s a turbulent time in Miami, but it’s THE place to be.  The Kennedys, the mob and the CIA all hold court here.  And Ike, he’s the star of his hotel.  But everything comes at a price.
To finance his dream, he sold his soul to mob boss Ben “The Butcher” Diamond.  Ike’s wife Vera, a former showgirl, and his three kids think he’s an honorable man, but he can’t break his pact with the devil. His life is a façade.  In fact, nothing at the Miramar Playa is what it seems.  By day, it’s diving clowns and cha-cha lessons.  By night, escorts have secret liaisons with husbands in the family cabanas, while Miami’s seedier residents and the law drift together to hear legendary singers, musicians and comics.  As Ike’s world threatens to implode, he fights for his family, and the Miramar Playa, in Magic City.      [www.starz.com/originals/MagicCity]

2010 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup

So I’m sitting outside a lounge in SOHO off West Broadway in NYC with a few of my buddies and the streets are bananas! On one block there is a sea of red and yellow (Spain) and a block down you can see orange and blue (The Netherlands).  For the past few weeks that I have been here in New York, I have noticed tons of paraphernalia being sold and purchased, flags being waved, friendly arguments over who the best players and/or teams are, and it seems like more than ever the media has played a huge roll in publicizing the games.   Now, I know that soccer is one of the biggest sports in the world and that the World Cup Final is the most watched event on the planet, but this year seems EXTRA HUGE!  ”We don’t want to speculate in numbers but we’re hoping this will be the biggest event ever,” Niclas Ericson, FIFA’s director of television said.  In 2006, it was said the over 700 million people tuned in.  I think Niclas Ericson may be right.  Kevin Alavy, a director of Futures Sport + Entertainment, a global sport research and evaluation consultancy said, ”The most watched events in history, by some margin, are the opening ceremony of the Olympics Games and the World Cup final. Historical events, like the inauguration of Barack Obama or the funeral of Princess Diana for example may be important from a cultural and historical perspective, but they simply don’t have the same scale of television audiences that mass sport events can generate.”

Personally I have enjoyed this year’s World Cup.  From watching all of the entertainers that have played a part in the festivities to simply being happy that South Africa was able to host the event, the WC has indeed been dope. I have occasionally been able to speak to my friend and South African resident, Shamiel X about the vibe and he said that it has been amazing.  Of course any of event of this magnitude is going to have a few problems but for the most part the people of South Africa have definitely benefited from the event.   All that being said, what has really stuck out for me were the commercials and print advertising.  Here are a few of my favorites.  Check em’ out..  Oh!  And congrats to Spain!!!!

Dhani Tackles the Globe

For those those of you that know me, you know that outside of filmmaking, two of my other loves are traveling and sports.  With that being said, I’m sure you can understand why I appreciate this show and am glued to the TV every monday evening.  NFL linebacker Dhani Jones has discovered that  sports can open a window into any culture.  Now, Dhani can add Globetrotter to his sports resume thanks to the Travel Channel series “Dhani Tackles the Globe”.   In the show Dhani travels the world to participate in such national pastimes as rugby in England, dragon boat racing in Singapore, Schwingen in Switzerland and pelota in Spain.  Off the field,  Dhani fully immerses himself in the culture of each city, turning to local residents for tips on where to eat, drink, shop and make a home away from home.  Did I mention that the second season is even better than the first!?!   The LA Times summed up the plot well:  The hourlong program follows Dhani Jones, a Cincinnati Bengals linebacker, out of the stadium and into foreign countries as he spends 10 episodes trying his hand at some of the more challenging sports that may not get a lot of screen time on ESPN (think Thailand’s muay Thai boxing; Switzerland’s Schwingen, a type of wrestling; and Spain’s jai alai, “the game of dodging death,” or at least avoiding speeding rock-hard balls to the head).

Dhani also discusses the similarities in world sports and the benefits they’ve offered him personally by  learning them in the article.  “The interesting thing about the show is each sport is sort of a variation of a sport, which is a variation of another sport and it’s sort of cross-training for football.  Hurling [which is shown in the Ireland episode] is basically a ball and a stick and you’re running around. When you think about football, you have a ball and no stick so I’m working on hand-eye coordination.  Rugby [in the England episode] is a direct reflection of football because rugby basically started football. When you think about dragon boat racing [Singapore] and how you work your shoulders, that’s just like lifting.  The difference is when you get into mixed martial arts such as sambo in Russia, pradal serey in Cambodia or muay Thai in Thailand.  That’s different, but all those kicks, punches and knees are working your core.  I’ve done the exercises, but I haven’t done the sport. This is a big cross-training effort to make me a better athlete.”  see article
